Some movies I can watch any number of times, some a few times and some once, and that's it (OK, so there are some I can't bear to see to the end...)

So what's the difference?

I reckon the ones that bear re-seeing have two essential qualities: a non-linear story and a novel sense of place. For instance, I would say that "The Chronicles of Riddick" has a non-linear story whereas "Pitch Black" is linear.

And I would say that movies like "2001", "Blade Runner" and "The Cronicles of Riddick" create their own atmosphere and take us somewhere new - so we share not just the journey but a novel journey - whereas so many other movies simply waltz us through a tidy stereotypical daydream, let's make something strange happen in downtown wotsit suburb-ville (and frighten the neighbours)...
